Double Raise

I had to train a new guy recently and he mentioned he wanted to transfer to another store at some point.  I advised him to work at one store for a bit, then ask for a raise, mentioning that another company is offering a little bit more, and then transfer to the other store and do the same thing there.  These jobs typically will give you a .75 cent raise per year, but you can get a .50 cent raise easily if you ask twice.  Whether he follows my advice is another matter.  I think most people are too shy about asking for raises.  If you do a good job you should not be too timid about asking for a raise.  This is a problem that I have had to deal with.  I am not a good haggler and it has cost me.

Don't you have mandatory raises once a year?

That's what I've seen in the corporate world. Then no other raises are available for the rest of the year. Jesus could work for a place, and he'd only get his 2% per year.

No, I don't think they are mandatory. The only mandatory raise I know of is the minimum wage, which is slowly raising. There was one person who worked for this company for several years who was never raised above minimum, which in a way was amusing, but at the same time absurd. I'm not sure why he didn't rage quit sooner.
